★ *Lessons from the life of Joseph - 7*
*_Are you ready to sacrifice?_*
*Genesis 39: 11-20*
_11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,_
_12 that Potipher's wife caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside._
_13 And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,_
_14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice._
_15 And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”_

_20 Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison._
Here in this passage, we see Joseph leaving behind his garment and fleeing from sin when tempted by Potiphar's wife. His decision cost him his reputation and landed him in prison, but his unwavering loyalty to God stands as a timeless lesson: sometimes we must sacrifice something to do what is right.
To live righteously often demands great personal sacrifice. Like Joseph, believers must make decisions that align with God's will, even when those decisions come with heavy consequences in this world.
Jesus made it clear to His followers that being His disciple comes with a cost. In Luke 9:23, He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Taking up the cross symbolizes the daily sacrifice required to live a life of faith and integrity. This world presents temptations, challenges, and opportunities for compromise, but being a true disciple of Christ means resisting these temptations, even at great personal cost.
Consider the calling of the disciples. In Matthew 4:18-22, we read about Simon Peter and Andrew, who left their nets to follow Jesus. They left behind their livelihood and family to answer His call. Theirs was a significant sacrifice, but they knew that following Jesus promised something far greater than the temporary security their nets could provide. Similarly, James and John left their father to follow the Lord, trusting in Him for their future. Their actions reflect a willingness to forsake everything in order to pursue what is right.
It will not be easy, but remember, the reward is far greater than the temporary suffering or loss. Joseph’s story didn't end in prison; he eventually became a ruler in Egypt, saving nations from famine. The disciples, too, became the foundation of the early Church, spreading the gospel and witnessing God’s Kingdom grow.
In conclusion, sacrifice is an essential part of the Christian walk. This may mean giving up relationships, ambitions, or even material possessions. Yet, as we read in Mark 10: 29 & 30,Jesus assures us that whatever we give up for His sake will be returned a hundredfold in this life and in the one to come.
