*★ Lessons from the life of Joseph - 6*

*_The power of understanding God's presence_*

*Genesis 39: 7-10*

_7 And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”_

_8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand._

_9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”_

_10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her._

Joseph’s story highlights the importance of recognizing God’s presence in our lives and how this understanding can keep us from sinning, especially in a world where many are tempted to stray from the path of righteousness.

When Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce him, Joseph's response was not just a rejection of the act itself, but a deeper understanding of the sin it represented. In a foreign land, away from the people who knew him, he could have easily rationalized giving in to Potiphar’s wife’s advances as a way to secure favor and perhaps even better his situation. However, Joseph knew that the presence of God was not confined to a specific place or people. He was aware that God's eyes were upon him, no matter where he was, and this consciousness of God’s omnipresence kept him from sinning.

We are in a world where we are constantly bombarded with temptations that can lead us away from God’s path. Whether it’s the pressure to fit in, engage in unethical behavior, or succumb to the lure of physical desires, the key to resisting lies in understanding that God’s presence is with us at all times. When we are conscious of this, it becomes much harder to justify sinning, even when it seems no one else will know.

Yes, the awareness of God’s presence is a source of strength, that enables us to resist temptation and remain faithful to God.

The Bible provides other examples that underscore the importance of living with the knowledge of God’s presence. For instance, in Psalm 139, David reflects on the omnipresence of God, stating that there is no place where he can flee from God’s presence. This awareness leads David to repent from the sin that he did to get Bathsheba and to lead a life of transparency before God, acknowledging that nothing is hidden from Him. Similarly, Daniel's unwavering faith and trust in God’s presence kept him safe from harm.

Understanding God’s presence also brings a sense of accountability and responsibility. When we realize that God is always with us, it influences our decisions, actions, and thoughts. We become more mindful of our behavior, knowing that we are constantly in the presence of a holy and just God. This consciousness leads to a life of integrity, where our actions align with God’s will, even when we are faced with temptations or challenges.

Furthermore, recognizing God’s presence brings comfort and assurance in difficult times. Joseph’s life was filled with trials, from being sold into slavery by his brothers to being falsely accused and imprisoned. Yet, throughout it all, Joseph knew that God was with him, and this knowledge gave him the strength to endure and remain faithful. The same is true for us today; when we understand that God is always with us, we can face any situation with confidence, knowing that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

In conclusion, Joseph’s response to Potiphar’s wife in Genesis 39:7-10 is a powerful reminder of the importance of understanding God’s presence in our lives. It is this awareness that keeps us from sin, guides our actions, and provides us with strength and comfort in times of trouble. Just as Joseph, David, and Daniel lived with the knowledge of God’s presence, we too are called to live our lives in the light of this truth, allowing it to shape our decisions and lead us on the path of righteousness.

*Take away:*

¶ *God's Presence is Everywhere:* Like Joseph, we must recognize that God is always with us, no matter where we are or what circumstances we face. This awareness should influence our decisions and actions.

¶ *Integrity in All Situations:* Even when far from home and family, Joseph maintained his integrity. We are called to do the same, staying true to God's principles regardless of external pressures.

¶ *Strength in Temptation:* Understanding God’s presence provides the strength needed to resist temptation
